I have visited an opened discussion which main topic was air traffic in Czech Republic.
The final resolution was the creation of another airport, which should help to uncharge the overloaded traffic in the main one,
in the Ruzyne airport. There is a strong need of smaller one, which would take charge of charter flights and also cargo traffic.
There were several possibilities, where the new airport would take place, concretely Ceske Budejovice, Ostrava airport, Pardubice,
Brno and Hradec Kralove. There are some old, small constructions with runway, which are mostly serving for army purposes. But nowadays,
when regime changed and international relationships are different, these airports lost their flair, and are in damaged and abandoned state.
As it seams, the best solution would be a complete revitalization and reconstruction of Hradec Kralove. This airport has runway, which is
still in use and the main reason of choosing this one was the best connection with the capital.
Mr Kotas made a revitalizacion of whole area, incuding a acces street plan and so on, and I took the challenge to design the airport itself.
There were several things which should be followen, the first one was to create smaller hall which could be aesily converted into larger one
if needed, and the second one was to minimalize used space and costruction surface area.
My way of designing the hall cover was based on simulation of the person move inside the airport. Trajectories which were following the person
move were summed together and their volume was multiplied to one thousand percent of an original size. The final product was vertically sliced
in ten meters intervals. Supporting and weight lifting scelet was based on these ribs.
My atelier master is very progressively thinking person, so I was forced to use same really innovating and non tradition materials to cover
the airport skelet. After a consulting with some specialist I have decided to hoist a thin membrane in between the steel struts of the supporting
system. The membrane is manufactured out of polyester, which creates a ten centimeter bubbles getting through special chemical reaction.
This filling material is transparent, bad temperature conductor and biggest plus is the weight, which is perfectly low. Very similar to material
which is going to be used as a cover shell for new swimming pools growing in Being for upcoming Olympic Games.
Covering membrane is also reacting to inner layout, some blocks are kind of coming out from inside, which lets the membrane look elastic.
When creating a base floor plan, I came out from Ruzyne airport, but I have divided it into two levels. The second level contains departure
lounges, restaurants, private clubs and employee background, the first one the rest, which is arrival lounge, shops, check ins, flying companies’
offices and other passenger services. The floor plan was also designed with idea of possibility of further grown in mind.
